Can Two Oil Filters With the Same Thread Be Interchanged?
Matching threads are only the first check. To select a spin-on oil filter, confirm that the filter manufacturer lists the exact engine application. Then check the sealing face, available clearance and valve specifications. A filter that screws onto the mount can still be the wrong service part.
Two M20 × 1.5 filters with different dimensions
FRAM lists the same thread on PH7317 and PH6607, yet the cans have different heights and the sealing gaskets have different diameters. These published dimensions give a counter technician three checks to make before offering a substitute. Look up the exact vehicle separately for each reference.
| Published measurement | FRAM PH7317 | FRAM PH6607 |
|---|---|---|
| Internal thread | M20 × 1.5 | M20 × 1.5 |
| Can height | 3.469 in | 2.625 in |
| Gasket inside diameter | 2.218 in | 2.266 in |
| Gasket outside diameter | 2.484 in | 2.531 in |

Check the base, the seal and the room around the can
The centre thread locates the filter on the mount. The gasket must meet the intended sealing land around it. Check thread diameter and pitch from the specification, then check gasket inside diameter, outside diameter and thickness against the approved filter or drawing.
Check the body diameter, height and removal clearance at the installed position. A shorter or taller can changes the physical envelope. Clearance by itself gives no information about the filtering medium or the required valves. Do not trial-fit or run the engine to settle an uncertain cross-reference.
Look up the bypass and anti-drainback requirements
A bypass valve can open when the pressure difference across the filter media reaches its specified opening condition. Its setting concerns differential pressure across the element. An engine oil-pressure gauge reading cannot supply that specification.
An anti-drainback valve limits oil draining back through the filter when the engine is stopped. Look up whether the application requires it, and where the service information locates the bypass function. Record the units and the source of any opening specification. If the catalogue is silent, ask for the applicable technical record.

Resolve a conflicting cross-reference
Record the vehicle market, model year and engine code, then look up the candidate in its manufacturer’s current application catalogue. Keep the exact suffix or revision. A reference copied from a removed filter can be a useful lead, even when its installation history is unknown.
If an interchange table suggests one part but the application catalogue excludes that engine, set the comparison aside. Ask the supplier for an engine-specific listing or written technical confirmation. Record the document, revision and reviewer alongside the decision.

Common questions
Can I use a longer oil filter if the threads match?
Use a longer filter only where the filter manufacturer lists it for that engine and the installation meets the specified clearance. Length and thread alone cannot confirm the seal, valve behaviour or intended performance.
Does a missing bypass specification mean that a valve is unnecessary?
An empty catalogue field gives no answer about the engine requirement. Check the vehicle service information and the filter specification, including where the bypass is provided.
Sources & further reading
Check the current vehicle manual and the instructions supplied with the exact replacement filter. General guidance does not confirm a vehicle application.
