How to Measure a Cabin Air Filter for a Supplier Enquiry
Measure a cabin filter to describe a sample, narrow a parts search or prepare a supplier enquiry. Do not use three dimensions as the sole proof that a replacement fits. The reference number, application, shape, sealing features and installation information belong in the same record.
Start with identity, then measure
Copy the full number from the filter and its packaging before doing anything else. Add the vehicle make, model, year and market if known. Keep a supplier's part number separate from an OE reference or a buyer's internal stock code. Record uncertainty explicitly; an unreadable digit should not become a guessed cross-reference.
MANN-FILTER's CUK 2345 catalogue entry illustrates this distinction: dimensions are presented alongside separate vehicle/application information, OE numbers and downloads. The measurement is one part of a broader identification record. This guide offers a practical enquiry method, not a production drawing or a substitute for the vehicle's specified replacement.

Prepare a record that someone else can repeat
Use a flat surface, a ruler or suitable measuring tool, and good lighting. Photograph the complete filter before handling it further. Include a label close-up and views of both faces and the edges. Keep any loose removable tray separate in the record so that the supplier can tell which component was measured.
Record whether the sample is new, used, bent or damaged. A used element can be distorted, and an old seal may no longer represent its original condition. Do not straighten, stretch or squeeze it until a preferred number appears. If the reference is damaged, treat its measurements as observations requiring confirmation.
Define the axes and the features included
For a rectangular element, record two perpendicular outer dimensions and the overall height or thickness. Mark the axes on a photograph or simple sketch so that the other person can reproduce your measurements. Manufacturers may use letters such as A, B and H; do not assume that every catalogue defines length and width identically.
State whether your measurement includes the frame, a projecting tab or a soft sealing strip. If a feature changes the outer envelope, record it separately and show it in a close-up. For an irregular outline, add the relevant widths, offsets or corner details rather than forcing the shape into an incomplete three-number description.
Write the units beside the values. Millimetres are convenient for a supplier enquiry, but the unit must be explicit. Keep the observed value and any catalogue value in separate columns. Do not round a vehicle filter to a convenient household-filter size or silently convert a measurement into a nominal dimension.

What to include in a measurement sheet
The following is an enquiry checklist. It does not prescribe universal tolerances or replace an approved drawing.
| Field | What to record |
|---|---|
| Identification | Sample ID, complete part number and known application. |
| Measurement basis | Tool, units, date and whether the sample is new or used. |
| Main dimensions | Labelled outer axes and thickness, with the measured features identified. |
| Shape | Curves, chamfers, stepped edges, tabs and other locating features. |
| Sealing | Where seals are fitted, with clear edge photographs. |
| Construction | One element or a set; separate tray or integrated frame. |
| Orientation | All AIR FLOW or UP marks, exactly as printed. |
| Open questions | Damage, unclear values or differences from the catalogue. |
Compare discrepancies instead of averaging them away
If two references appear to differ, keep both records. Check whether one value includes a seal and the other does not, whether the axes were swapped, or whether a set has been described as a single element. Share the original photographs with the supplier. Averaging the dimensions would hide the question rather than resolve it.
If the supplier proposes a replacement, ask for the reference drawing and the application basis. Where a dimensional tolerance is needed, agree it against that drawing and the intended housing. A universal tolerance invented for a website checklist would not establish that the part seats or seals correctly.
Do not trim the filter to fit an uncertain application. Return to the identification step if the proposed element requires an unexplained change to the frame, seal or housing.
Keep sample approval separate from compatibility claims
A procurement sample review should have a written outcome: approved against a stated specification, rejected for a stated difference, or pending an answer. Record which person reviewed the application and which revision of the drawing was used. Keep the physical sample or a clear traceable record where practical.
Matching dimensions do not prove filtration performance, and a media test does not prove vehicle fit. Before publishing a cross-reference, establish the application evidence as well as the agreed product specification. This is particularly useful when several visually similar parts are being added to a private-label catalogue.
For an HDASHER enquiry, send the reference list with the measurements and photos you have. Missing details can be identified during review; there is no need to invent a complete specification before opening the conversation.
Common questions
Can I buy a replacement using length, width and height alone?
Use those values to help identify candidates, then confirm the specific application, geometry, sealing and installation requirements. Similar dimensions do not establish interchangeability.
Should I measure the pleated media or the outer frame?
State what you measured. For describing the finished element, record its outer envelope and separately identify seals or projections. Media-only dimensions and packaging dimensions answer different questions.
What if my old filter is bent?
Record the damage and provide photos. Treat the measurement as approximate evidence to check against a reliable catalogue or drawing, not as a new manufacturing specification.

Check the current vehicle manual and the instructions supplied with the exact replacement filter. General guidance does not confirm a vehicle application.
